The story of the first Christmas tree in the White House began in 1889, when President Benjamin Harrison was in office. At the time, Christmas trees were becoming increasingly popular throughout the country, and the Harrisons decided to bring the festive spirit to the White House. With the help of a gardener from the White House staff, they decorated a large Christmas tree in the second-floor library. The tree was adorned with bright ornaments, including a portrait of George Washington, which was placed at the very top of the tree.
